TJ Varghese explains why every ingredient matters—and how fifteen years of observation shaped the botanicals used in the Greenwings studio.
Most soap ingredient lists are a lesson in chemistry—long INCI names that translate, if you look them up, to petroleum derivatives, synthetic preservatives, and artificial fragrance compounds. A Greenwings label reads differently. Every ingredient is something you could recognise in a kitchen, a garden, or an Ayurvedic apothecary.
That is not accidental. It is the result of fifteen years of formulation research by TJ Varghese, Greenwings founder, rooted in the botanical traditions of Kerala and guided by a simple rule: if it cannot justify its place on your skin, it has no place in the bar.
The Greenwings ingredient philosophy
Every botanical used at Greenwings earns its place twice—once for what it does for the skin, and once for the character it brings to the bar. Turmeric is not simply a colourant; it brings curcumin and a long history of use in Indian skincare. Neem is not merely a scent note; it is a genuinely antibacterial herb central to purifying skincare traditions across the subcontinent.
This is the distinction TJ draws carefully: the difference between an ingredient that is present in a soap and one that is actually active in it.
Six botanicals worth knowing
Organic Coconut Oil
Cold-pressed from Kerala coconuts, this is the base of every Greenwings bar. It creates a rich, creamy lather and moisturises without disrupting the skin’s natural oils.
Aloe Vera
Farm-fresh aloe gel soothes irritation and locks in moisture, making the bar ideal for sensitive, sun-exposed, or delicate skin.
Turmeric
Curcumin-rich and warming, turmeric helps even skin tone and calm inflammation. It has long been part of Indian beauty rituals.
Neem
Deeply purifying and antibacterial, neem is trusted in Ayurveda for oily and acne-prone skin. Its effect is firm but never aggressive.
Blue Pea Flower
Rich in anthocyanins, this vivid botanical gives some Greenwings bars their signature indigo hue while helping fight free radicals.
Lavender
Calming, mildly antiseptic, and gently aromatic. Lavender turns a daily wash into a quiet ritual rather than another routine.
Where the ingredients come from
Greenwings sources its botanicals from trusted growers, with a preference for Kerala-origin produce wherever possible. Cold-pressed coconut oil comes from within the state. Turmeric is sourced from Erode. Aloe vera is farm-fresh, not powder-reconstituted. These are not marketing claims—they are sourcing decisions that affect the finished bar.
